Birthday Wishes

One of my friends' birthdays is today, so Unicorn (who is his roommate) decided to throw him a surprise party. All was going well: we had his favorite kind of cake, balloons, and a plan to go out to eat at a fancy place to celebrate.

However. As the time for the party approached, Unicorn couldn't convince his roommate to get out of the room. When he finally did get him out of the room, he locked the door so we couldn't get any of the balloons in. So Unicorn had to come back upstairs, pretending he forgot something, in order to unlock the door. When Unicorn came upstairs, his roommate decided to go talk to one of the people trying to set up the surprise party. So that person had to scurry back to her room in order to distract him.
Then came the arduous process of herding the balloons into the room. There were 200 total, so we had to push and kick them down the hall to the room. And when we piled them in, they barely fit. Unicorn has to clean them up by tomorrow somehow...
Eventually, we got everything set up, and lit the candles on the cake. However, since they were trick candles, when the roommate blew on them, they didn't go out. This meant that smoke accumulated in the room and set off the fire alarm for the dorm.
Everyone ran outside, and we had to watch two fire trucks approach the dorm in order to assess what caused the alarm to go off. Needless to say, Unicorn was mortified, as we all were. In my defense, I didn't know they were trick candles, but we all should have forseen this kind of problem.
The poor roommate's birthday wasn't ruined, however. We all went out to dinner at a nice restaurant, ate cake, and buried ourselves in a sea of balloons.
